'Umar (Arabic: عُمَرْ‎) or 'Umar Farouk (Persian: عمر فاروق‎) is a historical Arab television drama series that was produced and broadcast by MBC1 and directed by Hatem Ali. Co-produced by Qatar TV, the series is based on the life of 'Umar (radiAllaahu-'anhu), the second Caliph of Islaam. The series had to face large controversy due to its depiction of 'Umar, Abu Bakr, Uthmaan and 'Ali, the four Righteous Khulafaa (الخلفاء الراشدون al-Khulafāʾ ar-Rāshidūn) (radiAllaahu-;anhum), along with other characters, who some Muslims believe should not be depicted much like the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The series consisted of 30 episodes and was originally aired in the month of Ramadan since July 20, 2012. It was made at a cost of 200 million Saudi riyals and filmed in Morocco, mostly in Marakesh, Tangiers, El Jadida, Casablanca and Mohammedia. After the series was broadcast on MBC, dubbed into several languages and subtitled in English on YouTube, it received great support from many different scholarly bodies and people watching it. As the series depended solely on reliable historical established facts, the series did not face criticism in terms of its content, as past movies and films faced.

Thia historical drama tells the story of 'Umar Ibn al-Khattaab (radiAllaahu-anhu), a close companion of the Final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and influential ruler who oversaw the radical expansion of the Islamic empire in the 7th century.

This series was co-produced by MBC1 and Qatar TV. A 30-episode series showcasing the various events during the life of 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (May Allaah be pleased with him) from his pre-Islamic days till his assassination. The series commences with the 23rd year of Hijra at Makkah, where the Muslim pilgrims have come together for the Hajj. In midst of them, we can see 'Umar ibn al-Khattaab (May Allaah be pleased with him) supplicating to the One Lord while doing the Tawaaf around the Ka'bah. On the return journey to Madinah from Makkah, they pass by a group of people tending to their camels in the desert. 'Umar (May Allaah be pleased with him) reminisces his past days, when he used to tend to his father al-Khattaab's camels in the desert, and how his father used to work him to exhaustion and beat him up if he slackened. However, now after his embracing Islaam how life has changed for him with no one to stand between him and his Lord. The series then takes you on a historical ride as memories come gushing back to 'Umar (May Allaah be pleased with him) about the various events that happened during his lifetime.

The production explicitly showcases the path of “Al-Farooq” and the values of equality, good governance, justice, tolerance, wisdom, compassion and leadership, etc. It further sheds light on the personal values of the Caliph, in addition to the preceding social environment highlighting the social values and geographic environment.

In parallel, the 'Umar Farooq Series (سلسلة عمر فاروق) continues its global reach with other contracts in the pipeline, and in alignment with other leading networks around the world — in several languages — whether in Muslim or non-Muslim countries, and dubbed or subtitled into English and French, among others.

Saudi producers, the Middle East Broadcasting Centre (MBC), say it is the largest ever Arabic production, with 30,000 actors and a technical team from 10 different countries who toiled 300 days to make this magnificent 30-part series.
